World Car Free Day- September 22
Since the first vehicle rolled on the roads in 1886, the world has a love-hate relationship with the car. Today, with more than a billion vehicles on roads around the world, it seems that we can not escape the pollution, the noise and the danger they create. One day a year, on September 22, people around the world try to avoid using cars and instead they're riding bicycles, walking or using public transport. The purpose of the day without cars is to turn off heating the planet for just one day by encouraging people to be less dependent on their cars and try alternatives. Car-free days were held throughout the 1990s and the first official global day without cars was launched in 2000. Many large cities, such as Bogota and Jakarta, close their main roads on this day and have walking and cycling events, and smaller events without Cars are held around the world.
