Social Media Day - June 30

Once upon a time there was no such thing as a "social media." People would call each other on the phone or send letters and if anyone was traveling abroad he would send postcards with pictures of the place. Did you live in that period? At that time of course there were social networks, but they were completely different, with no computer mediating between people.

Once to keep up with the news people would read newspapers and magazines, then came radio and television, and only at the end did the internet come. These forms of mass communication - communication that reaches a multitude of people at once - are very important in a democracy, because this is how citizens are constantly updated on current events and important issues, and in a democracy "the public's right to know" is one of the basic foundations.
But the internet can do much more than just blow up with written information and visual news. Thanks to it, people can communicate with each other in the fastest way when it comes to any topic and news that is published, and they can also make connections through it. They can share personal and news photos, digital creations like memes and GIFs, and they can also post business ads easily and for free.

Already at the beginning of the Internet age there were efforts to support social networks through computer communication like forums and chats. In the late 90's, personal profiles became a central feature of social networking sites and they made it possible to find friends with common interests. In 2004, Facebook was launched and in 2009 it became the largest social networking site in the world. Twitter was launched in 2006 and at the end of 2012 it had over 500 million users. In 2011 Google launched Google+ but in April 2019 the service was shut down. In the following years came more social networks like Instagram, Snapshot and more.
A Globalwebindex report found that the most common social media platforms today (2019) are (in order, with the most common use being # 1):
1. Facebook
2. YouTube
3. WhatsApp
4. Instagram
5. Twitter
6. LinkedIn
7. Skype
8. Snapshot
9. Pinterest
10. Tumblr

The report further revealed that most YouTube users are guests who have not logged into their accounts or are not friends even in the first place.
Most YouTube users are between the ages of 16 and 24.
The 16-24 age group is more active on Instagram than the 55-64 age group.
The site that founded Social Media Day is Mashable, a news site that focuses on social media and technology. He created this special day in 2010.
Today's idea is to recognize and celebrate social media and its contribution to education, journalism, entertainment and citizenship.

It is impossible not to mention that social media also has some really bad effects, as well as having many good effects.
Because of the ease of social media communication that results from it not being done physically but behind screens, people allow themselves to be violent and hurt each other on the network. This is something that must be addressed as soon as possible, because even though communication is done between computers, there are real people who are harmed by it. In honor of Social Networking Day you should remember and memorize it.
Another danger in the social media we have been witnessing lately is the phenomenon of fake news, which is spreading very quickly among people and influencing decision making. It is important to be aware that a lot of information that comes to us from social networks is false and that we need to check everything with reliable sources.
