Veterans Day in the United States - November 11th

Veterans Day is a holiday celebrated on November 11 each year in all states of the United States, as a day of honor for all war veterans who have served in the United States Army.

Veterans Day is not a day of remembrance, as it pays homage to all those who served in the U.S. Army, the living and the dead.

Veterans Day has become a federal national holiday since 1938. On this day all government non-essential agencies and many schools are closed during the day. Processions and ceremonies are held throughout the country and many businesses honor the veterans.

The national ceremony is held annually at Arlington National Cemetery, where the President speaks in honor of the veterans. Most major cities like New York, San Diego and Dallas have a Veterans Day parade. At many events, such as the church and football games, the veterans are asked to stand and then the audience honors them with applause. Many people wave the US flag on this day to show their patriotism and support for the military. At 11:00 am a minute of silence is observed to remember those who died during their military service. If you meet an army veteran or soldier on Veterans Day, be sure to thank them personally for their service.

The history of Veterans Day

At 11:00 a.m. on November 11, 1918, a temporary peace treaty, or armistice, was signed, and fighting during World War I came to an end. A year later, President Woodrow Wilson announced that November 11 would be called United States Armistice Day. In 1938 the Armistice Day became a national federal holiday. It was a day dedicated to world peace and held in honor of World War I veterans. In 1954 Congress decided to change the day to Veterans Day, because of the desire to honor veterans of all wars including World War II and the Korean War. In 1968 the day was moved to the fourth Monday of November. However, it was later changed to November 11, 1978 by President Gerald Ford.

The armistice in World War I was signed at 11 a.m. on the 11th of the 11th month.

In 2010, there were approximately 21.8 million discharged soldiers in the United States. There are about 9 million discharged soldiers over the age of 65. About 1.6 million discharged soldiers are women.

General George S. Patton, the famous World War II general, was born on November 11th.

Constitution Day (or Citizenship Day) in the United States - September 17

US Constitution Day falls on September 17, the anniversary of the official signing of the American Constitution in 1787.

The Constitution of the United States is a document created in Pennsylvania, the United States, by hard work and many compromises by the indefatigable constitutional convention representatives - which led to an agreement between the US states that allows the central government the power to impose its decisions and allows the US to stand as an international force, While maintaining a reasonable level of independence in each country separately.

The Constitution, created in 1787, 11 years after the Declaration of Independence, is the supreme law, the highest and most binding legal instrument in the United States legal system and the foundation of the development of the United States as we know it today.

The Constitution of the United States is designed to protect the rights of the individual, equality of rights regardless of religion, race, gender and more.

In 1865, an amendment to the Constitution (No. 13) abolished slavery.

While the constitution was written, people of non-white races and women of all races were not allowed to vote in the elections. It was only in 1870 that the 15th Amendment to the Constitution allowed the Afro-Americans to vote. In 1920, women were allowed to exercise their democratic rights by the 19 th Amendment, and in 1924 the Native-Americans also had the right to vote.

Doctors' Day - March 30

National Doctors' Day is a holiday in the United States, designed to recognize Doctors' contribution to the lives and communities of the individual. 

The date varies from country to country depending on the commemorative event used to mark the day.

In some countries the day is celebrated as a real holiday. On Doctors' Day Health organizations usually organize festive lunches for medical staff in which they are given symbolic gifts of appreciation. An old custom that exists is to send a greeting card or red Dianthusto to doctors and their spouses, and lay flowers on the graves of deceased doctors.

Doctors' Day was first on March 28, 1933 in Winder, Georgia. On October 30, 1990, President Bush signed the official law that March 30 each year would be a national holiday in the United States in honor of doctors.

March 30 is also Doctors' Day in Australia.

Doctors' Day is designed to highlight the contribution of doctors to community life and strengthen the bond between citizens and doctors.

We are used to going to them for small things like colds, prescriptions or certificate of illness and sometimes even for major illnesses.

Many times we wait long minutes in line until we enter and then they tell us that "it's just a virus" or that it is "nothing" and give a prescription for painkillers.

They see so many people and so many problems during the day that we seem transparent to them.

Doctor's Day is meant to remind us that the doctor is a person who has chosen medicine to help people, out of a sense of mission and interest. Every doctor has the reason why he chose to practice medicine.
