No Diet Day- May 6

May 6 is a day devoted to raising awareness of the dangers of unbalanced diet.
An unbalanced diet designed to lose weight quickly, or a diet based on too few calories, or the failure to eat some essential nutrients such as carbohydrates, proteins and fats, can cause the body irreversible damage.

The No Diet Day was initiated by Mary Evans Young from England, a woman who recovered from anorexia, and has been celebrated since 1992. This day is actually designed to encourage us to accept our body as it is, without making harmful diets, even if we have a few extra pounds. On this day we should stop and think if the low calorie diets we do do not harm us or endanger us, and whether we get all the food, minerals and vitamins we need on our daily menu.
The No Diet day is marked by feminist groups in several countries around the world, including the US, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, India, Israel, Denmark and Brazil.

The goals of the No Diet Day are:
To stimulate the discussion of whether there is only one "correct" body shape.
Raise awareness of discrimination against high-weight people, and fat phobia.
Declare a free day from diets and obsessions related to body weight.
Present the facts about the diet industry, emphasizing the inefficiency of commercial diets.
Respect the victims of eating disorders and weight loss analyzes.

How will we celebrate this day?
First of all, we will celebrate and love our body as it is.
We will listen to our body and eat according to the signs of hunger and satiety it sends us.
We will do a soul-searching about what we do to our bodies when we do diets as a meal.
We'll think about the future, how we want our body to be in a few years. Do we want to be healthy as adults or sick and weak?
We'll learn a little about why diets do not work.
We will eat tasty and nutritious food that we love and will not regret it.
While eating, we will chew well and concentrate on the taste of the food.
While eating, we will do nothing else.
Avoid talking about diets, weight and fat.
We'll do something physical that we really like.
Start loving your body on May 6th, say good-bye to the harmful diets and you know what, go on like this all your life, because your body is beautiful how it is!

International Midwives' Day - May 5

One of the most exciting professions that exists in the world is without a doubt the midwifery profession. There is not a single boring day in this profession. Helping a new life to begin, for a baby to come out of the womb into the world, is one of the most amazing things there is if not the! It is impossible to argue that midwives deserve a special day.

The International Day of Midwifery was first celebrated on May 5, 1991, and since then it has been celebrated every year in over 50 countries around the world.
The obstetrician in the video in the link does a special ceremony for each baby born.

The idea that a day should be held to honor and respect midwives was born at a conference held in 1987 at the International Confederation of Midwives in the Netherlands, with lectures that raise awareness of the importance of the profession, conferences where you can learn about the challenges of newborn work, small parties to lift the mood and gifts for midwives that show appreciation and attention.

Liberation Day in the Netherlands- May 5

Every year on May 5, the Netherlands celebrates its liberation from Nazi occupation during World War II (Dutch: Bevrijdingsdag).

The Dutch people were largely liberated by the First Canadian Army, aided by British troops, a Polish Armored Corps, and American, Belgian, Dutch, and Czech troops. Other parts of the country, especially in the southeast, were liberated by the Second British Army, which included American, Polish and French air forces.

On May 5, 1945, Canadian commander Lieutenant-General Charles Foulkes and Oberbefehlshaber Niederlande commander-in-chief Generaloberst Johannes Blaskowitz reached an agreement on the surrender of German forces in the Netherlands  at Hotel de Wereld in Wageningen. One day later, the surrender document was signed in the auditorium of Wageningen University, located nearby.

After the liberation in 1945, the day of liberation was commemorated every five years. In 1990, May 5 was declared a national holiday, the holiday of liberation that is celebrated every year.

On May 4, the Dutch hold the "Dodenherdenking", a day of remembrance for people who fought and died during World War II and the Dutch wars in general.

The Dutch gather near monuments all over the country and hold memorial ceremonies. One of the most famous memorial ceremonies is held near the National Monument in Dam Square in Amsterdam and at the Waalsdorpervlakte in the dunes near The Hague, where more than 250 Dutch opponents were murdered by the Nazis.

At eight o'clock in the evening there are two minutes of silence.

The next day, May 5, the liberation celebrations begin. All over the Netherlands there are music festivals, parades of war veterans, fireworks and big celebrations.

In honor of the day the Netherlands was liberated from the Nazis, here are some interesting facts about the Netherlands:

During World War II, the percentage of Jews deported or murdered in the Netherlands was the highest among European countries. Investigations conducted after the war revealed that many of the civilians collaborated with the Nazis. In the Netherlands, however, there were the most Righteous Among the Nations who assisted the Jews.

The Prime Minister of the Netherlands, Mark Rutte, used to get to work by bike! Even when he is hosted in other countries, he always prefers to get from place to place by bicycle.

More than a quarter of the Netherlands is below sea level. Half of the Netherlands is less than one meter above sea level. Schiphol Airport is 4.5 meters below sea level.

The Dutch are the highest people in the world. The average height of Dutch men is 1.84 meters and that of Dutch women is 1.70. Scientists say this is due to a combination of genes, nutrition and well-being. Others say it is because of the milk they consume in abundance.

The Netherlands is a very flat country. Its highest point is the Vaalserberg Hill, which is only 322.7 meters high, and is located at the eastern end of the country in the province of Limburg. You could say that Holland is as flat as pannenkoek (pancakes in Dutch).

Because Amsterdam soil is a thick layer of sludge and clay, all buildings are built on wooden pillars mounted on an average 11-foot-high sandy layer. The Royal Palace in Dam Square is built on no less than 13,659 wooden pillars.

The Netherlands is known for the extensive tulip fields of its tulips. Many tulip flowers and tubers come from the Netherlands. However, the origin of the tulips is not from the Netherlands. The first tulip tubers were brought to the Netherlands from Turkey, when it was discovered that the Dutch soil was very good for growing them.

The Netherlands leads in the number of home births. In many countries it is customary to give birth in a hospital. Not in the Netherlands: About 30% of all Dutch births take place at home.

The Dutch love coffee. After the Scandinavians, the Dutch are the biggest coffee drinkers in the world. They drink no less than 140 liters of coffee a year on average. 3.2 glasses a day!

86% of Dutch people speak English as a second language. All Dutch children learn English in school. If you visit Amsterdam, you will find that you can speak to almost everyone in fluent English.

The Netherlands is the largest exporter of beer in the world. In 2001, Dutch breweries exported 1.3 billion liters of beer abroad. Half of them were shipped to the United States.

Star Wars Day - May 4

Star Wars Day is an informal secular holiday that marks the greatness of George Lucas' Star Wars movie, one of the most watched classic films of all time. The holiday was celebrated by fans of the film. Like many things that started on social media, this holiday has also spread among the film fan population all over the world and is celebrated in many countries.

The reason May 4 was chosen to be Star Wars Day is the pun in the movie "May the Force be with you" that sounds like "May the Fourth be with you".

The first time this day was mentioned was on May 4, 1979, when British Prime Minister Margaret Thatcher took office. Thatcher's Conservative Party has published a statement in the London evening news: "May the Fourth Be with You, Maggie. Congratulations".
2011 was the first organized Star Wars Day celebration in Toronto, Canada. Celebrate it at Toronto's Morning Cinema with trivia questionnaires about the movie trilogy, a costume contest where the judges were celebrities, a video contest of the cast, parodies and remixes aired on the big screen and other fun things related to the Star Wars movie. Next year, on May 4, 2012 they celebrated the same way.
In 2013 Disney parks also joined in the celebration and did like Star Wars events and festivals.

International Firefighters' Day - May 4th

Firefighters are the people who protect us and fight for us in one of nature's most powerful elements - fire.
To be a firefighter means to be a person who risks his life for the sake of people he does not know, for the sake of animals, for the sake of forests, houses and the whole environment in which we live.
To be a firefighter one must first be very brave, because firefighters climb to heights, enter burning places, fly in firefighting helicopters in extremely dangerous conditions and sometimes do not sleep nights and whole days.

International Firefighters' Day

The history of firefighters' day
The first professionals whose job was to fight fires lived in ancient Egypt. At the time, firefighters worked for private companies and provided their services only to those who could afford them.
Later, in ancient Rome, Emperor Augustus turned the fire brigade into a trained force and received equipment and a salary from the country. These people were called firemen, they were part of the Vigiles force, the Roman force composed of the firefighters and policemen of ancient Rome.
Firefighters Day was created in 1999, after the deaths of 5 firefighters tragically during a huge fire in Australia where the wind direction suddenly changed and surrounded them with flames. This day is celebrated on May 4 because it is also St. Florian's Day among Christians, named after St. Florian who was one of the firefighters in the first battalion in ancient Rome who saved the lives of many people, and is considered a saint and patron of firefighters.

How to Celebrate Firefighters' Day
It's today to say thank you to all the firefighters who are saving so many lives.
Even on ordinary days, we seem to have forgotten to thank the wonderful and brave people, who do sacred work even though we do not feel.
People who are willing to sacrifice their lives to save others. People for whom the good of others comes before their personal good.
Not only when firefighters are called firefighters, but also when trapped under the rubble of buildings, when falling into pits, in road accidents when trapped in vehicles and in other unpleasant cases.

So because your contribution is so prominent, with whole days spent putting out fires, it's time to say thank you!

Anti-bullying day - May 4th

Every day is a good day to say no to bullying, but May 4th is the special day for it. Bullying against the weak exists everywhere. In school towards children, at work and also on the internet.
Bullying is when someone thinks he is strong, we will take care of someone who allows it, for pleasure or attention. The thugs harass those who are perceived as weak to get sympathy or simply out of evil and sadism.

Bullying is especially common in adolescence, where teens want to acquire high social status and popularity, so they do it at the expense of those who are weaker than them, usually it is a different wash from others.
The day of stopping bullying is a day to pay attention to the phenomenon of bullying in your environment. The day has been set by the UN, but it is celebrated on different dates in different countries in the world. There are places that mark the dayas Pink Shirt Day against bullying on one of the Fridays in February, but the idea is still the same.

If you suffer from bullying, today is the day to stand up for yourself and fight back or call for help. If someone around you is suffering from bullying, today is to stand by his side and help him.
First of all because we have to be human. Bullying hurts and scars remain for life. Unfortunately, there have also been cases where victims of bullying have ended their lives.
One more thing - do not forget that the "nerd" child who is being abused today can be your boss in a few years.

May 4th is also Star Wars Day and Firefighters' Day
