Zebra Day - January 31

International Zebra Day falls on January 31 each year.
What do you know about the zebra other than that she has black and white stripes  ?

In honor of Zebra Day, get some interesting facts about her:

The origin of the zebra is the African continent.

The zebra is black with white stripes.

The offspring of a zebra and a donkey is called: a Zebroid. Any hybrid between a zebra and a different type of horse is called a Zebroid. In English, the combination of a zebra and a donkey is called: Zonkie.

Zebras are more responsible for injuries to U.S. zoo workers than any other animal.

If a zebra is attacked, her whole family will come to her defense and attack the wounded zebra in order to drive out the predators.

Ostriches and zebras often live together to protect each other from predators. The ostrich can see better and the zebra can hear or smell danger better.

In 2009 two zebras starved to death in a Palestinian Authority zoo and replaced them with donkeys painted in black and white stripes.
People pay thousands of dollars to hunt zebras and other African wildlife on large farms in Texas.
In the past, they tried to domesticate zebras, but stopped. Zebras are unpredictable and can attack humans.

Each zebra has stripes in a pattern unique to it. Scientists can identify zebras by "scanning" their stripes like a barcode.

Animal experts believe that the pattern of the stripes is intended to confuse and deter flying flies from landing on zebras. The flies are attracted to dark and solid surfaces so they prefer to avoid the stripes of the zebras being deceived.

From birth the legs of the zebra foal are like those of an adult. 20 minutes after birth, the zebra can already use its legs to run and run wild.

The zebra's hind legs are so strong that they can break the predator's jaw with a kick, like a lion for example. They can also run at speeds of almost 40 km / h.

Answer Your Cat's Questions Day- January 22

If you love cats and raise at least one at home, you probably know they like to talk to us. Like babies who do not yet know how to speak, they howl in a language we don't understand and try to tell us something all the time. The cat is a very curious animal and they probably also have a lot of questions for us.
The yowl or howl of the cat is a long, drawn-out meow with a few possible meanings: your cat is scared, in pain, looking for a mate, or has captured prey.

To better understand your cats, here is an explanation of the most common types of howls:
A short, sharp howl - a surprised response to fear or pain, "something hit me".

Repetitive howls - your cat wants something. Food, opening a porch door or any other action they want you to perform.

A long howl in a rising tone - The Cat wants to make it clear that he demands that you carry out his request. The rising tone means "Hey, I asked for something!" Cats may howl even when they are bored and need attention. Did you play with your cat today?

Low concrete howls - Your cat wants to express dissatisfaction. He is angry and demands to change a certain situation. His bowl may be empty or his favorite toy may not be in the usual place.

Meow that sounds like "mirror" - make no mistake, cats put the letter R into their howls when they are happy and satisfied. Some will use this voice as a way to greet us when we return home, and others will express joy through it when they see us open the can.
Exhalations - A cat that exhales, sometimes accompanied by a low and threatening voice, wants to warn and demand that they not approach it. Cats do this when they are scared or angry.
Short, intermittent howls that resemble knocks, accompanied by staring into the air - your cat is probably in the middle of a hunt! Cats can spot a bird or other small animal at a great distance, and some will enter their hunting mode even if they have no chance of capturing it.

January 22nd is a special day for cat people, who will stop for a minute and see what their cat tells them!
At wellcat.com, you will find a list of cats' rules at home, such as sitting at the door of the bathroom or toilet when you are there, sleeping on your bed and not allowing yourself to move, walking between your legs, getting into boxes, hiding from you and more. The most common question of the cat according to the site is: "What is behind this door?"

Squirrel Appreciation Day- January 21st

January 21 is Squirrel Appreciation Day, a day created to recognize the role that the squirrel plays in nature and its contribution to the environment.

The Squirrel Day was created by Christy Hargrove, a wildlife restorer in North Carolina, USA, from the Western Nature Center in North Carolina on January 21, 2001.

The squirrel family in the world has about 50 types of squirrels that are divided into about 270 species.

A fossil study has found that the squirrel family originated in the northern hemisphere. Their earliest remains were found in the North American continent and date to about 36 million years ago. A fossil has been found in Europe from 23.8-33.7 million years ago.

Squirrels are not shy creatures, they have no problem getting out during the day, making them one of the rare wild mammals we often see, even on city streets and parks.

In honor of Squirrel Day, get 20 fun facts about them:

1. The squirrel family is common all over the world except Madagascar, Australia, New Zealand and Antarctica.

2. In Greek the word "squirrel" means skioros - "tail". Gave them the name of the Greek philosopher Aristotle.

3. The most prominent behavior of squirrels is the storage of nuts and acorns for the winter. What is needed for squirrel species that do not fall asleep this season.

4. The hind legs of squirrels are double-jointed, giving them the ability to run up and down trees very quickly.

5. In 2007, Iran claimed that 14 squirrels found near the country's borders were in fact spies.

6. The mating season of squirrels is from February to May, with a gestation period of 44 days. Usually two to four young squirrels are born in each litter.

7. Squirrels have 4 front toes, which are extremely sharp and are used to hold bark while climbing. They also have 5 toes on their hind legs.

8. In addition to living in the eastern United States, eastern gray squirrels are found in many western countries, the United Kingdom, Ireland and South Africa.

9. Squirrels can eat food at their body weight each week, which is about 1.5 kg.

10. Squirrels can fall from a height of 30 meters, without harming themselves. In jumping, or falling, they use the tail both for balance and as a parachute!

11. A male squirrel can smell a female in heat up to a distance of about 10 miles.

12. Arctic ground squirrel (a type of ground squirrel native to the North Pole) is the only warm-blooded mammal capable of withstanding freezing body temperatures during hibernation (winter sleep).

13. The squirrels' eyes are positioned in a way that allows them to see behind them.

14. In 2013, authorities shut down a campsite in the Los Angeles National Forest when they found an infected squirrel living there. The infection actually killed a 15-year-old boy from Kyrgyzstan, who was bitten by a mountain squirrel. A closure on 100 people had to be carried out for this infection to disappear.

15. Squirrels are smart creatures and can learn to navigate many obstacles to find the most effective way to eat, they are also quite good at finding shortcuts.

16. Squirrels can jump up to 20 meters. They have long, muscular hind legs and short front legs that work together to aid in leaping.

17. In the remake of Charlie and the Chocolate Factory from 2005, in the squirrel scene, the squirrels were not animated but real, and were professionally trained by Walnut Animal Trainer Michael Alexander and his team who spent 19 weeks training these squirrels for this one scene.

18. In 1963, a bridge called Nutty Narrows was built in Longview, Washington. The 60 feet total length bridge made the city the capital of squirrel-loving America. In the city of Longview, a squirrel festival is held in August every year.

19. Since 2004 the squirrels have been divided into five subfamilies: Xerinae (ground squirrels), Ratufinae (Oriental giant squirrel), Sciurillinae (Neotropical pygmy squirrel)Sciurinae and Callosciurinae (beautiful squirrels).

20. Squirrels have a great ecological impact. They are miners from burrows where rodents and reptiles live, they dig in the soil and extract from it substances that help the plants, but are also a bit harmful because they eat their plants and seeds. They are used as food for many predators like foxes, ferrets and birds of prey.

How to celebrate Squirrel Appreciation Day?

The best way to celebrate this special day is to learn about the types of squirrels.

There are so many interesting things about squirrels that we did not mention, like the Japanese dwarf flying squirrel which are small furry creatures (20-30 cm) and sweet, with big eyes and a long hairy tail. They are common in China, Japan, Northern Europe and Asia and are also adopted as pets .

Share the information about this day with friends and express love to squirrels! You can also buy squirrel-themed gifts like a doll or a miniature.

Bird Day - January 5

There are so many species of birds in the world, that one day celebrating in their honor is definitely not enough.
One of the days of celebration in honor of the birds is National Bird Day, a U.S. holiday celebrated in honor of the birds on January 5 each year, beginning in 1894. It is the first holiday invented in honor of the birds, and was founded by Charles Almenzo Babacok, who supervised Schools in Oil City, Pennsylvania.

This day is meant to promote the conservation of birds as a moral value. National Bird Day is a special day that has millions of fans celebrating through bird watching, learning about birds and other bird-related activities. Bird adoption and rescue is a particularly important Bird Day activity. 12 percent of the bird species are endangered from the world.
On this day many activities are held that teach how to behave properly birds and what they need. How to give them the best living conditions. People who adopt birds need to know that they are screaming, biting, soiling, need constant interaction, space to fly in and a varied diet.

The Avian Coalition National Campaign in the United States aims to improve the well-being of other parrots and birds that live in humans by encouraging their adoption rather than buying them as commercial pets, and encourages support for wildlife conservation programs and captive birds.

Monkey Day- December 14

Monkey Day is an informal day celebrating the existence of monkeys and raising awareness of the theory of evolution and the scientific experiments done in monkeys.

It began in 2000, when an art student at the University of Michigan named Casey Sorrow wrote to his friend about the December 14 calendar that is Monkey Day. Then they decided to celebrate this day in works of art and comics on monkeys. They passed it on to other artists and started promoting this day on the Internet. Since then, Monkey Day has become an international holiday day celebrated in countries such as the United States, Canada, Germany and the UK.

Monkey Day is also celebrated at monkey parties, eating Ben and Jerry's Chunky Monkey ice cream, stories about monkeys, thoughts about our ancestors from the monkey and more.

In honor of Monkey Day, get some facts about monkeys you probably didn't know:

Monkeys can count.

Male Capuchin monkeys urinate on themselves to attract partners.

The Bonobo monkey, which is the closest relative to humans, is bisexual by nature.

Scientists have discovered that monkeys are sensitive to optical illusions, just like humans.

In 2011, Monkey was arrested in Pakistan because of crossing the border with India.

Sad fact: farmers in Malaysia and Thailand use monkeys trained in picking large coconut plantations.

In Japan there is a restaurant where Macao monkeys serve as waiters. Maybe it looks cute or funny, but I'm not sure they enjoy it :(

In the picture: Macao monkey as a waiter in a restaurant in Japan (link)

Capuchin monkeys show aggressive behavior towards people who don't help other people.

Because of its size and its threatening appearance, Gorilla has the image of a cruel and dangerous animal, and the film King Kong, which described the gorilla as a very aggressive creature, has increased its character, but in fact it is a calm creature that feeds mainly from plants (leaves, roots and fruits).

In Star Wars, they almost let the monkey play Yoda.

A woman from Colombia was raised by monkeys after she was abducted and abandoned in the jungle when she was a child.

A monkey's mind is considered a delicacy in some countries of South Asia, Africa and China.

Monkeys can pretend.

Monkeys clean their teeth with the strings they find in nature.

Research has found that the strongest screaming monkeys have the smallest testicles.

Jellyfish Day - November 3

Jellyfish by Tuomas_Lehtinen - Freedigitalphotos.net
True, this sounds weird, but November 3rd is dedicated to jellyfish - it's International Jellyfish Day.

In honor of Jellyfish Day, here are some interesting facts about the transparent animals that live in the sea and surprise us with unpleasant bites and burns:

Some jellyfish are larger than humans and some are smaller than the pin.

Some countries eat jellyfish, for example in Japan.

Jellyfish are such ancient creatures. They were on Earth 700 million years ago, even before the dinosaurs.

The jellyfish does not have a brain, heart and bones but it has several types of eyes.

The jellyfish consists mainly of water and protein.

A group of jellyfish is called Smack.

Jellyfish can adapt to any type of water and to any depth of water pool.

Most jellyfish live less than a year and there are species that live only a few days.

The largest jellyfish recorded in the world is the lion's mane jellyfish, which can reach over 2 m (6 ft 7 in) in diameter.

Most jellyfish bites are just stinging and unpleasant, but there have also been cases of fatal bites: In Thailand, a 5-year-old boy died from a cubic jellyfish bite in August 2014. In 2002, two tourists in Australia died from an Iroquois jellyfish bite.

Jellyfish have millions of cells in the body called nematocysts and they contain a burning substance. These cells are used by them to capture their food by injecting a toxin into the prey. This is why it stings us when we touch a jellyfish.

Jellyfish eat many different types of things, such as small plants (phytoplankton), copepods (crayfish zooplankton), fish eggs and small fish larvae. They also eat the eggs and young larvae of the plankton and many other different types of marine animals. There are also jellyfish that eat other jellyfish!

What is good about jellyfish?
Jellyfish are very important creatures in the ocean and the great ocean. They are used as food for a number of marine animals such as fish and large turtles. They provide habitat for many small fish and they also sometimes protect small fish from being eaten by large predators with the help of their stinging cells. Also, many young crabs catch rides at the top of jellyfish so they do not have to swim.

Iguana Day- September 8

It is true that the iguana is an aggressive, cold-blooded reptile, with frightening bites and a tail that flutters loudly, but many people think it is cute.
Iguana Day is meant for us to get to know this cute creature and to raise awareness of how to treat it.
As is the case with so many pets, even the people who adopt iguanas do not always understand why they committed when they took home a baby iguana. This small package of scales can reach one meter and a half in length one day and has very specific nutritional needs and its own personality. They do not just say that it is easy to like iguanas but difficult to treat them.

Iguanas can be adorable pets, but unfortunately they are sometimes sold to people who do not know why they are entering and how to care for them properly.
This is why Iguana Awareness Day was created. This day is the ideal opportunity to learn how to keep your iguana tamed and friendly, how to take care of its health, personal care and how to tame it comfortably. With proper care and attention, an iguana can be a wonderful and rewarding pet for many years.

International Lion Day - August 10

August 10th is International Lion Day, a holiday in honor of the King of Beasts, the Royal Hunter, the King of Jungle that inspires the respect and awe we all adore. There is no greater compliment than what compares you to a lion, right?
The holiday in honor of the most beautiful and scary creature in the animal kingdom was founded by the rescue organization Big Cat Rescue, which takes care of the rescue and well-being of big cats like tigers, lions, panthers, tigers and more.

Although the lion is such a powerful animal, it is also endangered and the number of lions in the wild is getting smaller every year. In the past there were lions in many parts of the world: in southern Europe, in large parts of Asia and in Africa. Today, there is a small population in Asia, with only a few hundred individuals, in a limestone forest in India, and in Africa there are only about 75,000 lions.
Unlike other animals that are hunted for meat, fur or fangs, the lions have people hunting just to show how brave they are. In 2015, an American hunter named Walter Palmer shot a lion known as Cecil, who was 13, who lives in the Huanga National Park in Zimbabwe. The lion Cecil (named after Cecil Rhodes, founder of Rhodesia), was named the king of the jungles of Zimbabwe. It was one of the most famous lions in Africa and was a tourist attraction. His killing provoked much outrage around the world.

In honor of International Lion Day, get some fascinating facts about the King of Beasts:
A male lion usually weighs more than 250 kg, but is still the second largest cat after the tiger.
The roar of the lion can be heard up to a distance of 8 km.
In the wild, male lions live 10 to 14 years.
The lioness performs 90% of the hunt.
All cats, from lions to domestic cats, do not feel sweet taste.
A porcupine can eliminate an entire flock of lions.
Source: YouTube

In 2005 a girl was brutally beaten in Ethiopia by 7 men who abducted her. A band of three lions came to her aid, drove the men away and chased after them. After that, the lions stayed with her until help came to her. (Source)
The adult lion has no natural enemies and stands at the top of the food chain, next to the tiger. No animal dares to mess with the lion except the hyena, who sometimes allows himself to steal the lions' prey when they are not there and only the lionesses guard.

International Cat Day - August 8

International Cat Day is the cat holiday celebrated on August 8th. This special day is also meant to pamper those who have been privileged to grow up in a warm home, and also to raise awareness for stray cats who are in constant danger to their lives.

In honor of Cat Day, get 20 interesting facts about cats:
1. Some cats have survived a fall from a height of 32 stories (about 320 meters) on a concrete surface mainly due to their alignment reflex.
2. Cats have 32 muscles that control their outer ear (compared to humans, which have 6 muscles).
3. In the city of Talkeetna, Alaska, the cat Stubbs served as mayor for 15 years, from July 18th 1997 until his death on July 21st 2017.
4. The longest cat in the world was 1.23 meters (39 inch) long when measured taut.
5. Cats howl "Meow" just to communicate with humans.

6. The CIA spent $ 20 million on training cats as spies after the Soviets in the 1960s. The first spy cat was run over by a cab.
7. Studies have found that raising a cat can reduce the risk of stroke and heart attacks by a third.
8. The oldest movie on Youtube of cats is from 1894. Link to the video
9. Around the world there are about 10 cat cafes where you can sit with the cat for coffee for hours: in Taiwan, Japan, Austria, Korea, and Hong Kong.

Source: Facebook

10. Cats do not feel a sweet taste.
11. People in China eat every year about 4 million cats as a delicacy.
12. Cats sleep for 70% of their lives.
13. In Italy a cat inherited a fortune of $ 13 million from its owner. His name was Tommaso and he was a black stray cat that found its way into the home of Maria Assunta, who died at the age of 94.
14. According to studies, cats recognize the voice of their owner, but they are quite indifferent to it.
15. Cats have 3 eyelids.
16. In Japan black cats are considered to bring good luck.
17. Cats have more than a hundred voices in their repertoire, while dogs have a total of 10.
18. Just as a person has a unique fingerprint, every cat also has its own unique noseprint.
19. The smallest cat in the world is called Tinker Toy and his height is a total of 2.75 Inch. He weighs 680 grams.
20. In ancient Egypt, deceased cat owners would shave their eyebrows in mourning over their deaths.

How to celebrate International Cat Day?
If you have a cat, do not forget to pamper him (as if you don't do it every day anyway). If you only have one, why not addopt one more? A cat is like French fries - you can not have just one.
Do not forget to put a bowl of cold water outside for the cats, and if you see a cat in distress, do not ignore it. You can contact groups that help cats on Facebook, take it to your local veterinarian, call the municipal hotline or charities that help cats to consult what to do.

Rat Day - April 4th

Rats have a bad reputation that developed many years ago. Blame them for the Black Death plague talking in Europe a few hundred years ago, accuse them of chewing everything that was on the ground and below it in the thousand islands in the Pacific, accusing them of being dirty, transmitting diseases and biting. They say they should not be approached.
But anyone who raises rats as a teaching animal knows the secret: rats are friendly, loyal, intelligent, and very kind animals. You could say cute too.

They are no dirtier than other animals. And in that plague of that thing in which millions of people died, it is not the fault but the fleas. And the fact that they chew and destroy infrastructure, it's not their fault, it's in their genes. It's like blaming the sheep for farting and destroying the ozone layer.

World Rats Day is designed to raise awareness of these animals and eliminate the bad name that has come out of them, to make people understand that a rat is not a bad animal that spreads diseases, but a kind and gentle animal.
Pixar tried to do that in 2007 in the movie Ratatouille, about the cute chef-rat.

Bat Appreciation Day - April 17

April 17 celebrates the tribute to the bats. This is the time when bats come out of their winter sleep state and therefore the time to learn about the roles of bats in the wild.
One of the reasons to celebrate Bat Day is their help in humans to get rid of annoying insects. A bat can eat up to 1,000 mosquitoes in one hour.
It is said that the global Corona plague that broke out in December 2019 in Wuhan, China and continues to this day, is the result of eating bats infected with the SARS-COV-2 virus. To the extent that this is true, the bats cannot be blamed because they should not have been eaten in the first place. There is enough other food and the bats should be allowed to live in peace in their areas without harming them.

Fun facts about bats:
There are species of bats that can live up to 40 years.
Bats can see in the dark and are able to hear much higher frequencies than humans.
The bat is the only mammal that can fly for a long time naturally.
There are over 1200 known species of bats.

The largest bat in the world is the flying fox bat, whose wingspan reaches 1.70 meters. He lives in Cambodia, Vietnam, southern China and Thailand.
The United States is home to 48 estimated species of bats.
About 70% of the bats are insectivores.
Bats are very clean animals, they clean themselves almost all the time.

Dolphin Day - April 14

Dolphin Day is a day that is celebrated all over the world and is meant to raise awareness for this smart animal that lives in the sea.
In honor of Dolphin Day, here are some facts about the cute animal you may not have known:
There are almost 40 species of dolphins swimming in the waters of the world. Most of them live in the shallow areas of tropical and temperate oceans, and five species live in rivers.
2. Dolphins are predators. In their menu you will find fish, squid and crabs. A dolphin that weighs 260 pounds eats about 33 pounds of fish a day.

3. Dolphins are known for their mischievous behavior and are very intelligent. Dolphins are as smart as monkeys, and the evolution of their brains is surprisingly similar to that of humans.
4. Dolphins are part of the whale family that includes the orcs and pilot whales. The deadly whales are actually dolphins.
5. The dolphins are very sociable. They live in groups, hunt together and even play together. Large groups of dolphins can have 1,000 members or more.

6. The pregnancy of the dolphin lasts between 9 and 17 months, depending on the species. After birth, dolphins are very maternal. Dolphins were observed hugging their little dolphins.
7. Dolphins are very attached to their mothers. They suckle until the age of two and then swim after their mothers wherever they swim, from the moment of birth until they are 3-8 years old.

8. Dolphins have excellent vision both in and out of the water. They hear frequencies 10 times higher than the upper limit of adult humans. Their sense of touch is also developed, but they have no sense of smell.
9. Dolphins have some natural enemies. Their main threat is the humans who pollute their water, fish and hunt them down. Some species of dolphins have an unclear future. In 2006 the Yangtze River dolphin became extinct. Another threat to their lives is their shark water friends.

10. Because dolphins are mammals, they need to rise to the surface of the water to breathe. Unlike terrestrial mammals that breathe and eat through the mouth, dolphins have separate holes for each task. Dolphins eat through the mouth and breathe through a hole in their back. This prevents them from inhaling water into the lungs while hunting, and reduces the risk of drowning.

Zoo lovers' day - April 8

Every year, on April 8, Zoo Lovers Day is celebrated. This is a perfect day to visit the zoo.
The first zoo in history opened in 1752 in Vienna, Austria, on the orders of Emperor Franz I. It was originally intended for viewing only by the emperor's family, but was opened to the general public later in 1765.

Ten years later, another zoo opened in Madrid and then in Paris in 1795. The enthusiasm for zoos in Europe was immense. The people wanted to see strange and exotic animals that came from distant places that could not be seen anywhere else in those days without TV and internet.
What was once a demonstration of the power and wealth of aristocratic families, who kept captive animals to boast about, often in poor conditions and far from their natural living conditions, has over the years become rather a place to save and preserve extinct species. Today, the zoos try to provide, nurture and protect the animals that live in them an environment that is as similar as possible to the environment from which they came.

Interesting facts about zoos:
Chile has a zoo where people are the ones in a cage and the animals are free. (Link)
At the beginning of World War II, London Zoo workers feared that the zoo would be bombed and its venomous snakes would flee to the city and therefore killed everyone.
The other animals were moved to other, more protected places. During the war the zoo was indeed bombed, but no animal was harmed. Only one zebra escaped to the city but was captured and returned to the garden.

Rabbit Day - Forth Saturday in September

The fourth Saturday of September is International Rabbit special day.
While many people like to raise this cute animal at home, rabbits also suffer from more harsh and cruel treatment from humans. Many rabbits are captured and taken to laboratories for the purpose of using them for experiments of medical and cosmetic products, hunting them for their fur or for edible purposes.

Rabbit Day is designed to raise awareness for this cute animal and remind you to protect and preserve it. So give your rabbit a delicious carrot and when you buy grooming products, note that they have not been tested on animals.

Fun facts about rabbits:

The difference between a rabbit and a dassie: Rabbits have long, large ears relative to the size of their head, a more prominent tail and their hind legs are longer compared to their front legs. Dassies on the other hand have small and short ears, a short tail and 4 short legs of the same length.
The rabbits do not belong to the rodent family, but to the Lagomorpha family.

The rabbit's teeth are very strong and they never stop growing.
The rabbit has 28 teeth in total.
There are today 45 breeds of rabbits known for them.
If the rabbit is cared for properly, it can reach the age of 10 years.
Rabbits can not vomit.
Rabbits need some hay in their diet to prevent the formation of lumps of fur in their stomach.
Rabbits can make sounds of cats.
The pregnancy of the rabbit lasts 28 days.
A rabbit mother breastfeeds her children only 5 times a day.
Rabbit droppings are widely used in the fertilizer industry.
The rabbits' eyes are very far apart, which allows them to see from behind as well.
Rabbits begin breeding age as early as 3 or 4 months of age.
When rabbits come across something that scares them, they can die of fear.

Rabbit day dates in the next few years:
